General Types & Descriptions

Memberships

Please note: the below member classifications represent only those that provide revenue to the Foundation. Other member types, for example, "Community Members," are not listed below as those memberships do not require a membership fee, and thus no revenue is generated from those members. To see all member categories--despite their impact on revenue--see the Membership page.

  • Foundation Membership (Foundation As A Service): organizations investing in / leveraging open source software or communities--not specifically Apereo-hosted projects--accessing Apereo resources, support, and services to increase the organization’s operational effectiveness and better engage the open source projects they rely on (formerly Educational Organization Members).

    • Examples:
      • A university running several open source enterprise systems that would like to better engage the open source community to influence the development road map.
      • A community college that would like to better engage with open source options (communities and commercial providers) through procurement.
      • A research lab looking for community-based peers to share non-technical resources around a discipline-specific open source project.
    • Member Benefits:
  • Institutional Membership (OSPO As A Service): organizations supporting locally or collaboratively (e.g., system, consortia, etc.) maintained open source projects—not specifically Apereo-hosted projects—accessing Apereo resources, support, or services to increase internal capacity, project awareness, adoption, and success of campus-run open source software.(Organizational Member, Annual): Entities involved with local (e.g., campus-based) or collaborative (e.g., system consortia) open source software/technology activities, not specifically Apereo Sponsored Organization's Projects, accessing Apereo support or services.
  • Sustaining Membership (Organizational Member, Annual): Entities providing restricted funds to a Sponsored Organization's Project or entities providing restricted funds in support of an Apereo Foundation initiative or any other operational/organizational program.

      • JB Hunt Transportation provides a $5,000 contribution to CAS.
      • Pepperdine University provides $2,000 to SakaiLMS.
      • Public Digital provides $2,000 to support Apereo's annual "Open Source Jobs in Higher Ed Report."
      • Carnegie Mellon provides $1,000 to support Apereo's OSPO-edu initiative.

      • Organizational membership.
      • One vote in the Apereo Board of Directors general election.
      • Recognition on all Apereo promotional collateral.
  • Commercial Membership (Non-Organizational Member, Contracted): Commercial service providers leveraging Apereo's Sponsored Organization's Projects as part of their business' products and/or services.

    • Examples:
      • Bluehost provides 10% of revenue from support and hosting services related to "Apereo CAS."
    • Benefits:
      • Use of Apereo and Sponsored Organization's Project(s) marks.
  • Friends of Apereo (Individual Member, Annual): individual persons providing unrestricted funds to the Apereo Foundation.
    • Examples:
      • Jane Smith provides $100 to help increase awareness, adoption, and viability of open source software in education.
    • Benefits:
      • One vote in Apereo Board of Directors general election (Individual member seat only).

Partnerships

  • Program Partners (Organizational Member, Contracted)--organizations providing targeted sponsorship for Apereo's strategic initiatives or operational programs.

Grants

Donations

  • General Donations (Non-Member, One-off)
    • Examples:
      • Red Hat provides a $20,000 contribution to Apereo to support the foundation's ongoing work to raise awareness and adoption of open source in higher education.
      • RocketChat provides $10,000 to promote the company's ed tech solutions and services to open source-oriented educational institutions.

      • Membership on the Apereo Advisory Board.
      • Recognition on all Apereo promotional collateral.
  • In-Kind

Organizational Members, as defined by the Apereo Bylaws, have voting rights and are defined by their payment of a Supporting Subscription to the Foundation.
Organizational membership in the Foundation is open to educational, academic, research, and commercial organizations and institutions with programs and missions consistent with the purposes of the Foundation as set forth in Article I, Section 2. Organizational Membership criteria shall be established by Organizational Members from time to time by an affirmative vote of the majority of Organizational Members present at a meeting where a quorum exists.

    1. Commercial Affiliates--companies leveraging Apereo projects and other open source software or resources as part of their business' products and/or services. (commercial contributions to Apereo or projects)
    2. Friends of Apereo
      1. individuals contributing to the Apereo Foundation's work to increase awareness, adoption, and viability of open source software in education. (Individuals)
      2. unencumbered contributions to the Foundation.
    3. Grants--an award, usually financial, given to the Foundation or a project or community by a company, foundation, or government to facilitate a goal or incentivize performance.

Program Description

Apereo Commercial Affiliates are companies that demonstrate support for the Apereo Foundation and its constituent software communities.

Dues

  • Standard membership, $2,500
  • Platinum membership, $10,000
  • CAS Supporting Commercial Entities
    • $0-25 million: US$5,000, CAD$6,600, €4,750
    • $25 million – 100 million: US$10,000, CAN$13,200, €9,500
    • $100 million – 750 million: US$15,000, CAN$19,800, €14,250
    • $750 million – 4 billion: US$25,000, CAN$33,000, €23,750
    • More than 4 billion: US$50,000, CAN$66,000, €47,500

Benefits

    • Listing on Apereo Commercial Affiliates web page.
    • Preferential rates for conferences.
    • Mailings of all inquiries to the Apereo website regarding software, services, RFPs, etc.

Business Processes

Application

  1. Applicant produces a short statement (2 or 3 paragraphs) about their company, and why they believe synergy exists between the company and Apereo.
  2. Apereo Board evaluates the application
  3. Apereo Board votes on Commercial Affiliate membership.

Agreement (MOU)

  1. Apereo Business Manager sends approved Commercial Affiliate Apereo Commercial Affiliate Agreement (MOU) to review and sign.
